Architects and builders often ask us: what is supposed to be in a structural engineering package, and how do you know if what you received is complete?
A structural engineering package is the technical backbone of a residential project. Get it right, and plan check moves quickly, framing crews know exactly what to build, and the building department has no reason to send the set back. Get it wrong, or incomplete, and you're looking at resubmittals, redlines, and falling behind schedule.
Here's what should be in that package.
The Core Deliverables

Stamped structural plans. This is the foundation of the package, quite literally. Foundations, framing, floors, and roofs all need drawings that show how the structure carries load from the roof down to the soil. These sheets are what your local building department reviews line by line.
Structural calculations. Beam sizes, header dimensions, connector types, and load paths are all determined by calculating that specific building's span, roof and floor loads, and wind or seismic zone.
Shear wall and lateral system design. Wind and seismic forces don't care about your floor plan. A structural engineer works out how the building resists lateral loads, which is important for open-concept homes with fewer interior walls.
Foundation design and detailing. This component specifies footing depths, reinforcement, and slab requirements based on soil conditions and the loads the foundation must carry.
Coordination with architectural, MEP, and energy plans. The structural drawings account for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and energy systems, so duct runs, panel locations, and equipment loads are worked out before the set reaches plan review.
Buildable drawings. These drawings go through a constructability review, checking framing sequence, connection access, and installation logistics against the design before the set is finalized.
